Rocco Bert Rock Formations near Rennes-le-Chateau 1907 and 2010

In 1907, l'Abbe Bérenger Saunière commissioned a set of 33 postcards depicting images from inside his church at Rennes-le-Château, and his domain, that includes his Church garden, the Tour Magdala, the Villa Bethania, the d'Hautpoul Château, and some nearby views.

The postcards sold for 10ct and seemed to have been place for sale in various places in and around Rennes-le-Château, including the nearby village of Rennes-les-Bains, where Saunière seemed to have done a brisk trade in selling them to visitors come to bathe in the thermal waters located there. He comments in a letter to a friend that: “All the bathers take the complete collection. The cards have so much success that I can hardly keep up supplying them"

I have now tracked down all of the postcard views and will do a series of articles about some of them.

The Rochers de la Rouire: dits - Roco-bert postcard features a view quite close to Rennes-le-Chateau in the area of Labadous and La Valdieu (The Valley of God). The photos seem to have been taken near a spring called, perhaps appropriately, des Quatre Ritous - the Righteous Four or perhaps even the Four Priests.
