The statue of Mary Magdalene above the entrance to Sauniere's church has always intrigued me. It was the way she held the cross, like a crossbow, that interested me. It pointed into the landscape and I thought perhaps it was a clue pointing to something that Sauniere might have hidden, or a location of interest to the mystery.

I had already taking a compass bearing of the cross on one of my early trips to Rennes-le-Chateau, but wanted to check again that I had taken the reading correctly. When I visited Rennes-le-Chateau in February 2013, it was an ideal opportunity to do so as the village was all but deserted. With the aid of a ladder, Pat climbed up to take the compass reading. It was then he noticed something on top of the cross normally out of view to those looking at the statue from below, it was Jesus nailed to the cross. Mary Magdalene held a crucifix!

As you can see from the above photographs, the crucifix is not in good condition.
I am not certain if this stature of Mary Magdalene is unique to Abbé Sauniere, with the cross held in this position, but I have yet to come across a similar version. If anyone knows of one, please contact me.
